Inspiring remarks by Steve Lopez, author of "The Soloist," were interspersed with cello music by members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra at Carry the Torch, an annual fundraiser for the Volunteer Ministry Center, whose mission is "to end homelessness, one person at a time." Lopez, columnist with the Los Angeles Times, spoke of his relationship with "one person," Nathaniel Anthony Ayres, a homeless musician on Skid Row in Los Angeles, once a promising violin student at the Juilliard School before mental illness led him to life on the street.
